Prepositions в, на

1. В — “in / into”

Used when something is inside something or within boundaries.

Meaning

  • Location inside a space

  • Movement into a space

Examples

  • Я в доме — I am in the house

  • Я иду в школу — I’m going to school

  • В Москве — in Moscow

  • В сумке — in the bag

Typical uses

  • Enclosed places: room, house, bag

  • Cities, countries, buildings

  • Transport with movement inside:

    • в машине (in the car)

    • в автобусе (on the bus → conceptually inside)

2. На — “on / at”

Used when something is on a surface, open area, or conceptual platform.

Meaning

  • On a surface

  • At / on an open or abstract place

  • Participation in an activity

Examples

  • Книга на столе — The book is on the table

  • Я на работе — I’m at work

  • На улице — on the street

  • На концерте — at a concert

Typical uses

  • Surfaces: table, wall

  • Open spaces: street, square

  • Activities/events:

    • на уроке (in class)

    • на встрече (at a meeting)

  • Transport as a platform:

    • на поезде (on a train)

    • на самолёте (by plane)

3. Why Russian uses в or на (the logic)

Russian does not choose prepositions randomly. It’s about how the place is perceived:

  • Container / insideв

  • Surface / open space / systemна

That’s why:

  • в школе (school = building/container)

  • на работе (work = activity/system, not a box)

  • на улице (street = open space)
